History of Genji

Cyborg Genji Shimada has made peace with the augmented body he once rejected, and in doing so has discovered a superior humanity.

As the youngest son of the master of the Shimada ninja clan, Genji lived a life of luxury and privilege. He had little interest in his family's illegal enterprises, and despite his impressive predispositions revealed in his ninja training, he spent most of his time living as a playboy. Many in the clan considered Genji's recklessness to be a serious risk and resented his father for spoiling and protecting him. When the clan leader died unexpectedly, Genji's older brother, Hanzo, demanded that Genji take a more prominent role in their late father's empire. Genji refused, much to Hanzo's anger. The tension between the brothers led to a violent confrontation, which left Genji in agony.

Hanzo thought he had killed his brother, but Genji was saved by Overwatch and the intervention of Dr. Angela Ziegler. The organization saw Genji as a possible asset in its ongoing operations against the Shimada clan. Severely injured, Genji clung to life, and Overwatch offered to rebuild his body in exchange for his help. He underwent an intense cybernetization process, which improved his natural speed and agility, while optimizing his impressive ninja skills. Transformed into a living weapon, Genji passionately set out to dismantle his family's criminal empire.

As time passed, Genji felt more and more divided. The mechanical elements of his body were repulsive to him, and he couldn't accept what he had become. When his mission was complete, he abandoned Overwatch and wandered the world in search of meaning. He wandered for many years before his path crossed with the omni-monk Zenyatta. At first Genji rejected Zenyatta's wisdom, but the benevolent omniak did not let this deter him. Eventually Zenyatta became his mentor, and under the monk's tutelage, Genji came to terms with his dual existence as a man and a machine. He learned to accept that despite his cyborg body, his human soul was intact, and he came to see his new form as a unique gift and strength.

Now, for the first time in his life, Genji is free. Even he doesn't know where his path will lead.
