History of Mei
Mei is a scientist who has decided to fight for the preservation of the environment.
Although many believed that the advent of new technologies, the rapid growth of the omnian population, and the dramatic increase in resource consumption were responsible for increasingly violent climatic phenomena, their true cause remained unknown. In search of a solution, Overwatch set up a series of eco-observatories in key remote locations around the world.
Mei-Ling Zhou was part of this multi-year initiative. An outstanding climatologist, she had introduced cutting-edge innovations in the field of climate manipulation that protected areas at risk in Asia and elsewhere. She was continuing her research at the program's monitoring station, the Antarctic Observatory, when it was struck by disaster: a sudden, severe polar storm swept through the facility and cut it off from the outside world, leaving the buildings damaged and the scientists cut off. Their supplies dwindling, they decided to enter cryostasis in a last-ditch attempt to survive until help arrived.
But help never came. The team's cryogenic chamber was finally discovered years later. Mei, still in hibernation, was the only survivor. The world in which Mei awoke had changed dramatically. Overwatch no longer existed, the already severe climate problems had worsened, and all eco-observatories had ceased to function. All the clues they had discovered were lost.
Mei decided to continue her work by herself. Equipped with a portable version of her climate manipulation technology, she travels the world, hoping to re-establish an eco-network and trace the sources of threats to the planet's ecosystem.
